Human services itself describes a multitude of possible agencies and therefore career opportunities. However one of the huge parts of human services is adoption, foster care, and assisting children in general. Being a social worker you can help make sure that children are placed in good, loving homes, where they are going to be taken care of. There has been countless people that have helped to form and shape the way that social workers help children; but by far one of the most influential people would have to have been Charles Loring Brace. Another huge avenue to help the needy at the begging of the development of human services were hospitals. They would provide healthcare, food, and shelter to those in need. As time went on taking care of the poor, orphaned, elderly and sickly, and others in need changed as the world became more industrialized and as a result there where more people who needed help. One way you can see this was in England with the creation of the Elizabethan Poor Law of 1601. This was a key turning point for human services as a whole, and it help guide social welfare in England as well as the United States to help and create the system that we have today. The way human services formed in the United States was affected a lot by England (Woodside McClam, 1998). When are country was first forming much of the aid people received came from neighbors and people in the community. We then created our own version of laws that guided how we took care of the needy modeled off of the Elizabethan Poor Law. This lasted for a while until people started to see those in need as just lazy or not taking care of themselves, and that if you aided them it was just encouraging them to do nothing.
